Bing Launches Disavow Links Tool

The search engine penalties are increasing more common these days and many website owners concern a lot about ‘bad links’ that point to their site online. They think that the frequent linking from the poor quality sites could have a negative impact on their company’s search engine rankings as well as their business growth.

In order to help webmasters have more control over the links to their site, Bing has introduced a new feature called ‘Disavow Links’ in bing Webmaster Tools. The tool allows webmasters to submit page, directory or domain URLs of spammy or low quality sites that link to their site. The new feature can be found under the ‘Configure My Site’ area of Bing Webmaster Tools.

Bing Disavow Links Tool

Bing’s Duane Forrester said, “Webmasters have been asking for a way to disavow links for years now. This tool starts that conversation. It can help Bing understand a webmaster’s intent around links pointed at their site.”

According to an official Bing’s blog post, Disavow links tool allows users to easily and quickly alert Bing about the links that they do not trust. They can use the drop-down menu to input signals to Bing at the page level, a directory level or at a domain level. There are no limits to the number of links that they can disavow. Users can also export the list easily once it is built. This will inform the search engine about the sites that users want to stay away from, and the respective content of users’ site will not be associated with that low-quality site anymore.

Regarding the effect on search engine rankings, Forrester said, “Given there are hundreds of signals at play when determining rankings, telling us to ignore the value from some links, in most instances, won’t have a dramatic effect.”

Daniel Nolan, managing director at theEword, commented, “In the aftermath of the Google Penguin algorithm update, many webmasters have been reviewing old links and asking search engines for a way to undo black or grey hat techniques. Bing’s Disavow Links tool certainly has interesting implications for SEO, but a similar tool from Google would undoubtedly have a much bigger impact.”

It is to be noted that Google announced a plan to develop similar disavowing links tool before some months ago. But Bing beats Google in this case.
