Google Leads April 2012 U.S. Search Engine Ranking

comScore, a global leader in measuring the digital marketing landscape, has recently released its qSearch report of the U.S. search market in April 2012. Google sites topped the U.S. search engine ranking list in the explicit core search market.

comScore releases qSearch data every month to help users analyze the impact of contextual searches on the search marketplace. comScore defines “Explicit Core Search” as “user engagement with a search service with the intent to retrieve search results.”

According to comScore’s report, Google sites top the U.S. explicit core search market in April 2012 with a 66.5% market share, which is 0.1% up from March 2012. Microsoft sites came in second with 15.4% of the total market share whereas Yahoo sites grabbed the third spot with 13.5% of the share. Ask Network and AOL, Inc. accounted for 3% and 1.6% respectively of the explicit core searches made.

Microsoft Revamps Bing Search Results Page

Microsoft has redesigned its Bing search results page by removing the unnecessary cluttered items from the page. This fresh simpler look is an effort to help users scan results more easily and navigate more smoothly than before.

The “Bing Team” wrote in a blog post, “Over the past few months, we’ve run dozens of experiments to determine how you read our pages to deliver the link you’re looking for. Based on that feedback, we’ve tuned the site to make the entire page easier to scan, removing unnecessary distractions, and making the overall experience more predictable and useful. This refreshed design helps you do more with search-and gives us a canvas for bringing future innovation to you.”

Google Launches “Penguin Update” to Target Webspam

Google has rolled out a “Penguin Update” for its search engine algorithm, in order to minimize spam in search results. The update targets sites that involve in various webspam tactics like keyword stuffing, unusual link schemes and more.

Matt Cutts, Distinguished Engineer of Google wrote in a blog post, “…we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content.”

Global Paid Search Analysis Spending for Q1

Covario, the largest provider of search marketing services and management solutions, has recently released a report on Global Paid Search Spend Analysis. The report gave insight into paid search in the first quarter of 2012.

The analysis found that the paid search advertising spending increased by more than 22% from last year for technology and consumer electronics companies. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising spending rose in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions and Cost-Per-Click (CPC) was down worldwide.

Google Enhances Adwords with New Features

Google has recently introduced two new tools and updated an existing feature in its Adwords product. The new upgrade will definitely give marketers greater control over location targeted ads.

Google Adwords is Google’s advertising product that displays the ads of the advertisers for people who look for products or services on Google. The ads are created based on the keywords related to the marketers’ businesses. They are displayed when target customers search for these products or services.

The optimized Adwords offers greater services through features such as zip code targeting and Location insertion. It also improves the existing Advanced Location Targeting feature.

Richard Holden, Google product management director said, “These set of features will give advertisers more control over how they target advertising locally. It also gives consumers higher quality ads by giving them the right ad at the right time.” Read more
